Privacy Policy

Rankd ("we", "our", "us") respects your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how we protect it.
What We Collect
- Account info: Email, display name, username (when you sign up). If you use Apple or Google Sign-In, we receive your name and email from those providers.
- Rankings: Your rankings across movies, TV shows, and books, your positions, watch tags, and comparison history.
- Social: Your friend connections and activity visible to friends.
- Device info: Push notification tokens (to send you notifications). On the free, ad-supported tier, our advertising provider (Google) may access a device advertising identifier and set cookies to serve and measure ads — see Advertising & Affiliate Links below.
- Analytics: Anonymous usage events (screens viewed, features used) via PostHog. No personally identifiable information is sent to analytics.
What We Don't Collect
- Your location (unless you opt in for city leaderboards in a future update)
- Your contacts or phone number
- Your browsing history outside the app
- We never sell your personal data to anyone
How We Use Your Data
- To sync your rankings across devices
- To show your friends what you're ranking (only to accepted friends)
- To calculate community leaderboards (aggregated, anonymous)
- To send push notifications you've opted into
- To improve the app based on anonymous usage patterns
Advertising & Affiliate Links
- Ads (free tier): Rankd's free tier is supported by ads served through Google (AdSense on the web, AdMob in the mobile apps). Google may use cookies and a device advertising identifier to serve and measure ads, and to limit how often you see the same ad. See Google's advertising policy. Rankd Pro is completely ad-free.
- Affiliate links: Some "where to watch" and "buy the book" links (Amazon, Bookshop.org, Apple, and similar programs) may earn us a commission if you make a purchase. These links never change your rankings, your recommendations, or what we show you — they're just the normal links to where a title is available.
- Your rankings are never sold or shared with advertisers. Ads are not targeted using your ranked lists or comparison history.
Data Storage
Your data is stored on servers in the United States (Neon Postgres on AWS us-east-1). Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. API tokens are encrypted. All connections use HTTPS/TLS.
Third-Party Services
- TMDB: Movie and TV show data. We don't send your personal data to TMDB.
- Apple / Google: Authentication only. We receive your name and email, nothing more.
- Google AdSense / AdMob: Ads on the free tier (see Advertising). May use cookies and an advertising identifier.
- Stripe: Web payment processing. We never see or store your credit card number.
- PostHog: Anonymous analytics. No PII is sent.
- Sentry: Crash reporting. May include device type and OS version, never personal data.
Your Rights
- Access: You can view all your data in the app (Profile → Settings).
- Delete: In-app — go to Profile → Settings → Delete account. Your account and all data are removed immediately. If you can't sign in, email support@therankd.com and we'll delete it within 30 days.
- Export: Pro users can export their rankings as CSV.
- Opt out: You can disable push notifications in your device settings and opt out of analytics in the app.
Children
Rankd is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
We may update this policy. If we make significant changes, we'll notify you in the app.
